FAQ
-
Please explain your charges? We have a minimum one hour charge and then charge per the minute thereafter. (most other firms “round up” so basically charge you for time they haven’t done). We are UK based and proudly pay all the taxes imposed upon us.
-
What are your criteria for inclusion for costs to be paid via your pro-bono fund?Every case is judged on its own merits, your initial application will be processed by a caseworker who passes the application to a panel who use a points system to allocate resources. The panel of made up of 3 to 5 staff
-
I have noticed you work for people on benefits, are you funded by the Dept of Work and Pensions? We receive no instructions of funds from the DWP in any way, the reason we are offering help to those on benefits is simply that no other solicitor does so, they focus on clients who can afford their exaggerated fees.
-
How long will my case take?Truly we have no idea, it will depend totally on the merits of the case itself, some are simple (a letter to a landlord sorting out a leaky roof) to many months (disputed custody of a child during a messy divorce).
-
I noticed you have a buy now pay later facility with Payl8r, how does this work?We have teamed up with Payl8r to be able to offer our clients the option of interest-free payments for our costs, we make no commission on this (in fact we cover their admin charges), and they do not charge interest if the invoice is paid within 30 days so it gives clients time to budget if they need to.
-
What is our success fee when we win a case?Nothing, all compensation belongs to you.
-
What are Disbursements? These are third-party charges which we have no control over, whether they are needed depends on your case. Typically they would include charges for:- o Court costs (admin charges set by the government); o Specialist Doctors (needed for personal injuries, abuse, rape cases etc); o Psychological assessments (personal injuries, discrimination cases etc); o Counselling (personal injuries, abuse, discrimination etc); o Surveyors (for claims against builders etc); and o Urgent representation (such as a physical solicitor if arrested, we may have to use a local solicitor to do the initial visti)
-
How quickly will you respond to my enquiry? We aim to respond to all enquiries within 48 hours, in practice it is usually far less.
-
What are your opening hours? We have personal caseworkers online at our head office from 9 am to 8 pm every day (if they ask nicely I may let them have Christmas and bank Holidays off).
-
Do you do no-win, no-fee work? No, most solicitors only take on cases where there is over a 95% chance of success, and then only after asking you to pay for After the Event (ATE) insurance which pays them out if they lose. Rest assured solicitors always look after their interests. We find the cost of this insurance is more than our standard charge, as such it makes no sense to do such work.
-
What is your approach to the environment?Being mainly internet based we don’t actually use that much paper or product, when we do it's recycled paper and after use is shredded and recycled again, all our energy at our main office is from renewable sources.
-
Do we do Legal Aid work?We are in the process of applying to do such work, once sorted we will include suitable links on our website.
-
For £60 an hour we simply won't get professional help?Lets crunch numbers - a good solicitor earns around £40,000 a year, this equals £800 a week, assuming a 40-hour week means they earn £20/hour. The other £225 is split between non-fee earners, office costs but mostly lines the pockets of the directors. We pay our solicitors £40 per hour, equivalent to £80,000 per year, as such we have applications from only the best applicants.
-
Why are you so much cheaper than normal solicitors? The way the business is arranged results in us being able to remove many costs incurred by our competitors, we do not have luxurious offices and non-fee earning staff (secretaries, cleaners and so on) but the main saving is because we do not exploit our clients because of their situation.
