The easiest way is to apply online, however, you can also make your claim through the post (either call the helpline or download a copy). Please note that the person you care for no longer has to sign their consent on the online claim form. There is a disclaimer section where you will declare that the person you care for is aware or will be made aware of any possible consequences to their benefits. The person you care for will be notified of the application and any impact it may have on their benefits.

    When to Claim

Carer’s Allowance can generally be backdated for up to three months before the date you submit your claim (provided you meet the conditions for this period). However, there is an exception where Carer’s Allowance can get backdated further than three months. For example, if you claim Carer’s Allowance within three months of the person you care for qualifying for their disability benefit. Then, providing that you meet the Carers Allowance conditions throughout the entire period, you can get paid right up to the date the qualifying disability benefit was awarded.

Please note that you need to ask for Carer’s Allowance to be backdated on the claim form. It will not be backdated automatically. Carer’s Allowance can also be claimed up to three months in advance, provided that you show that you can meet the conditions from the date you want your claim to start. In addition, you should mention whether the person you are caring for is receiving disability benefits specific to terminal illness.
